Paradoxical Leadership – Managing Contradictions

08:30 on Wednesday, 14 Feb 2018

Do you want to be better at managing contradictions at work? Join us for breakfast on 14th February 2018 to learn about:

Paradoxical Leadership – Managing Contradictions

Hosted by Cass Business School in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Insurers, this interactive iWIN Forum session is open to anyone interested in managing contradictions at work.  Organisations are full of contradictions. They have to invest in radical new products without cannibalising existing products; balance short and long-term goals; be locally connected and have global reach. Managers can become caught up in these contradictions as “either/or” challenges, prioritising one goal and sacrificing the other. Both are important and effective managers need to balance both.

In this session, we will introduce you to paradoxical leadership and how to develop “both/and” responses to contradictions. We will explain some common workplace paradoxes, discuss typical responses to paradoxes, and provide techniques for developing your own capabilities in paradoxical leadership.

Speaker:  Professor Paula Jarzabkowski – Associate Dean of Research & Enterprise, Cass Business School

Professor Jarzabkowski is a world leader in the topic of how strategy implementation affects competitive dynamics. She has studied multinationals in critical infrastructure, telecommunications and, most recently, the global insurance and reinsurance industry. Paula has won prizes for her outstanding impact on business and her most recent work is published in Strategic Management Journal.

Professor Marianne Lewis – Dean, Cass Business School
Professor Marianne W. Lewis is an international thought leader in the field of leadership and organizational paradoxes, who has studied leading multinational firms, including LEGO, Unilever, and Coca-Cola, as well as entrepreneurial and family-owned businesses globally. Her widely published work on paradoxical leadership includes a recent article in Harvard Business Review.
